What to buy to start off as a bedroom DJ

Here is a list of four essential equipments a DJ must have

·       A DJ mixer

-      A DJ mixer is the central component of the whole DJ set. The main role of the mixer is to control the frequencies of the sounds (high, middle and low pitch sound), adjust the output volume, and most importantly switch the playing music from one turntable to the other.
-      I recommend a simple 2 channel mixer, nothing fancy. Reloop mixer’s suit a budget and are great value for the money.

·       Two CD players/turntables

-      CD player/turntables basically play the tune how the DJ wants to (ie: faster/slower/in sync with the other turntables speed). You only require two turntables to operate a DJ gear system and I recommend sticking with only two, leaving the four turntables at a time for the big boys.
-      A solid reliable CD player I have personally used is the Pioneer CDJ-200. It has 3 effects which broaden the creative capacity of the Disk Jockey.

·       Headphones

-      Headphones are attached to the Dj mixer, they enable the DJ to listen to a turntable playing a song with 0 volume (so the crowd does not hear it playing and the DJ can sync the upcoming tune) while the other turntable is playing the music that the crowd does hear.
-      Any pair of headphones will do of course, but look for one which blocks out background noise so you can concentrate much clearer

·       A monitor

-      A monitor is generally a small speaker directed at the DJ so he/she can hear what is playing much clearer, I recommend this for all bedroom DJ’s for practice.

How much to spend on each item?
·       DJ mixer – nothing over $400
·       Two CD Players – $250 to $500 each
·       Headphones – $50
·       A small monitor – $100

Remember, there are also package deals out there which can give you turntables and a mixer for a better price then buying the pieces separately.

So now you know what to buy, there are a lot of great deals out there with DJ gear. Start searching online and find gear that fits what you like!

The DJ Guide

Nowadays, more and more people are turning to alternative solutions for extra income. You can’t blame them for it, everyone is getting sick of waking up to a freezing morning, getting ready, working an 8 hour shift, getting back home to realise they are too tired to do anything else and then the cycle repeats again. All this work for a small paycheque, and already half of it went to rent, gas, water and electricity bills.

Are you tired of this robotic life? Do you feel like you need something new? Some extra cash to feel more secure with your life?

Well if you love your music and you’re up for it, why not consider becoming a disk jockey?

Now you may say, ‘Buying the equipment is way too expensive’ or ‘Becoming a DJ is too hard’. Well that’s where you’re wrong!

The live entertainment industry has been growing quite a lot in the past decade. Nowadays, there is equipment that suits almost every budget. One can spend approximately $900 and have everything he or she needs to start training their skills in their bedroom!

What are the benefits?

There is a tremendous amount of benefits to becoming a Disk Jockey, here are a few:
-
Great for an extra source of income – A disk jockey, at beginner level, will average an easy $50 an hour. Imagine being a DJ for a reasonable 3 hours at the local club on a Saturday night. That’s $150 a week! For what? Playing music and having a great time! It may not the best payout, but definitely a great start and a welcome addition to the standard paycheque.  That’s only the start, you can work your way up to the bigger ranks where DJ’s get on average $200 an hour depending on the size of the venue.
-
Its great fun Being a Disk Jockey is great fun, you get to meet a lot of new people, you get to work with music you love, you stand out from the crowd and regardless of how you look physically, you seem to be much more attractive, it sounds weird, but it’s amusingly true.

-         DJs are in demand nowadays – More and more people prefer booking Disk Jockeys than live music bands for occasions such as engagements, hen’s nights and weddings because; DJs are much more cheaper and suit the tight wedding budgets, DJs can play all requested genres of music, and its much more fashionable with the modern day pop culture.

These reasons are just a few of many, upcoming posts will include
-   What to buy to start off as a Disk Jockey
-         How to practice and organise your cd’s
-         Basic Disk jockey skills
-         Where and how to find a gig
-         Extra tips you need to know
-         More advanced disk jockey skills
-         And more...
